You may have noticed this location as the place where Compo’s trousers fall down, in the Last of the Summer Wine Christmas special “Welcome to Earth”.
Holmfirth became famous to millions as the backdrop to Last of the Summer Wine, but television is only one chapter of the town’s story.
The Th’owd Towser suspected to mean “old jail” in local dialect. Originally built in 1597 as the church lock up, has been used as a mortuary, ambulance station and fire station. In 1673 Th’owd Towser held Reverend Edmund Robisnson due to accusations of marrying couples without a license, he was later found guilty of high treason and hung in 1690.
The cobbles formed part of a historically important route through central Holmfirth.
The route connected Towngate with Hollowgate and formed part of the main road between Woodhead and Huddersfield.
Before modern road construction, travellers, traders, carts and packhorses would have passed through this narrow part of the town.
